30,000CBM Liquid Ammonia Bunkering Vessel Design of DSIC Obtains AIP from BV

On September 3, the latest self-developed 30,000cbm liquid ammonia bunkering vessel design obtained the certificate of approval in principle from BV Classification Society during the Hamburg Maritime Conference in Germany, and He Xu, deputy general manager of DSIC, attended the certificate issuance ceremony.

Facing the strategic goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emission in the maritime industry by 2050, the zero-carbon emission characteristic of ammonia fuel has received wide attention from the industry. DSIC carries out high-quality development and design of liquid ammonia preparation plants, large liquid ammonia carriers (VLACs), liquid ammonia refueling vessels, and liquid ammonia-fueled power vessels serving the maritime liquid ammonia industry chain, and provides customers around the world with a total solution to decarbonize the shipping industry by using green ammonia as a sustainable alternative fuel.

DSIC and BV have extensive cooperation in the field of green and low-carbon emission reduction vessels, and the cooperation between the two sides in the technology related to ammonia fuel refueling is a continuous innovation on the road of exploring zero-carbon vessels. With this 30,000m3 liquid ammonia refueling vessel obtaining the certificate of approval in principle, it marks that DSIC has realized the full coverage of major ship types such as oil tankers, container ships, bulk carriers and refueling vessels in the development and design of liquid ammonia-fueled zero-carbon vessels. A more complete technical puzzle has been formed in terms of liquid ammonia fuel system design, liquid ammonia storage tank design, comprehensive layout of refueling system and risk assessment.

Rendering of 30,000cbm liquid ammonia bunkering vessel

The 30,000cbm liquid ammonia bunkering vessel has an overall length of about 180 meters, and is set up with three C-shaped liquid cargo tanks with low evaporation rate. It adopts ammonia-fueled electric propulsion system with a service speed of 13 knots. It is equipped with high and low refueling stations with high refueling rate and bow thrusters to ensure flexible, safe and efficient operation. For the risk of ammonia toxicity diffusion, DSIC, together with BV Classification Society, considered and carried out HAZID risk assessment of liquid ammonia refueling system and ammonia diffusion from user's point of view, to further ensure the technical reliability of the ship's design program and to lay a solid technical foundation for the ship to be introduced to the market.
