DSIC Delivered The 20000TEU Container Ship “COSCO Gemini”
On April 10th, DSIC held the naming and delivery ceremony for the 20000TEU container ship "COSCO Gemini", which was built by DSIC for COSCO and is of the largest scale in China. It sets a new record for building and delivering container ship which is the largest in China, marking that China's construction of ultra-large container ships has entered the world's first rank. Sun Bo, the General Manager and Deputy Secretary of DSIC, Sun Yueying, the Chief Accountant of COSCO Shipping Group, DSIC leaders such as Liu Zheng, Yang Zhizhong, Deng Changlian, Dong Xiaodong and other related department heads attended the ceremony.
“COSCO Gemini” is with a total length of 399.80 meters, a width of 58.6 meters and a depth of 30.5 meters, it has a full-load capacity of 20119 TEU and can transport more than 20,000 7-seats SUVs at one time. The maximum load under scantling draft is 198,000 tons, and the deck area is equivalent to the size of 4 standard football fields. The ship was built with a huge amount of basic materials, where the pipelines weight was 1007.5 tons, the length of cable laid was 450,000 meters, and the coating area was 750,000 square meters; Anti-crack steel plate of 85mm thickness was adopted for the hatch coaming and main deck. It is the first container ship using domestic anti-crack steel material, which has broke the technical monopoly of Japanese and Korean shipyards.
On September 9th 2015, DSIC signed a contract with China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company at that time to build two 20000TEU container ships, and it became the shipyard of the first batch to build 20000TEU container ships in China. The first ship “COSCO Gemini” was launched on October 18th 2017, and its construction cycle in the dock was only 6 months. During the sea trial, the ship's overall performance, various systems and equipment were tested together at sea, with all the parameters and indicators met the expected design requirements, which won the high recognition of the shipowner.
The overall performance of the ship is excellent. At the beginning of the design, DSIC carried out the prospective design for diversified operations in the future, fully considered the profile optimization under the operating conditions of more draft and multiple speeds, adopted efficient propeller, rudder and other energy-saving devices, which made its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) lower than the basic value by more than 50%, meeting the third-stage technical standard requirements on carbon emissions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in advance. At the same time, DSIC considered in advance the possibility of using clean power fuel such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the future, and reserved the installation system of LNG fuel on the ship to meet the modification and upgrading needs of large-capacity LNG fuel tanks for certain routes, so as to adapt to the more stringent emission requirements in the future. In addition, the ship energy efficiency management system equipped with the ship has a variety of "soft" energy-saving technologies such as route optimization, trim optimization and weather optimization, which facilitates the operating management of the shipowner and achieves good effect on energy saving.
