DSIC (a subsidiary of CSIC) signed a contract of building two 7500m3 liquefied carbon dioxide  (LCD) vessels for Northern Lights JV DA .This is the first 7500m3 LCD vessel ever built in the world and is known as the LCD vessel providing the professional service for marine carbon transport and sequestration with the largest hold capacity of liquefied goods. DSIC has been implementing the concept of “green shipbuilding”, and spending great efforts in the green, low-carbon and environmental protection field by accelerating the R&D of new technology and processes and expanding the application of new equipment and new means. Meanwhile, DSIC continues to move towards the market of large new energy gas vessel by catching up with the era’s steps and accumulating experiences to provide a solid technical support to achieve “peak carbon emission and carbon neutrality”.

The vessel has a total length of about 130m, width of 21.2m and structural draft of 8m. It will be registered in Norway and classified by DNV. This vessel is planned to deliver to the ship owner in the first quarter of 2024. DSIC has been upholding the design concept of “green, environment-friendly, safe, efficient and comfortable”. This vessel model was independently designed by DSIC, and DSIC owns independent intellectual property. DSIC has adopted many innovative technology during its R&D, which guides the future direction of development for this vessel type. This vessel will be equipped with the full-pressure C-type liquefied tank that is made of special materials that are firstly used in the world. Meanwhile, the main engine will use duel fuel of liquefied natural gas and marine light diesel. Its emission of sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide meets the strictest requirements. It has reduced the emission level and improved the energy efficiency by adopting two innovative technologies of rotor sailing and reducing resistance by air bubble to meet the most advanced EEDI Phase III requirements.

This vessel will be used for the CO2 capture and storage plan in Europe to collect CO2 produced by the European industry and transport it to the terminal receiving CO2 in the west coast of Norway for permanent sequestration 2600m under the seafloor, helping to reduce the emission of CO2 and achieve the ultimate target of overall carbon neutrality in Europe. The construction of the terminal receiving the CO2 in the west coast of Norway has been commenced from all aspects. Meanwhile, it has also began the construction of the pipeline system for seabed injection, which will be completed in 2024. Northern Lights JV DA is a joint venture of Statoil, Royal Dutch Shell and Total (France). Since 2019, the parent company of Northern Lights JV DA has carried out a qualification audit on more than 20 shipyards in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Europe and China after the first-round selection among more than 50 shipyards. Finally, DSIC has won the award and signed the contract after having passed the audit on its HSE, quality, human rights, management and other systems.
